How to make your own naan at home?

The best and easiest naan recipe !

I would also call this a garlic butter naan or just a butter naan if you don’t like garlic. Naan is native to Iran but also and very popular in India and Nepal. It is an indian flat bread made traditionally in a very big clay tandoor oven, which is heated with wood.

However making naan at home is only possible on a pan.

Does naan have eggs?

The tradional indian naan recipe does not contain eggs, though I know the iranian recipe might include eggs. This is also because a lot of people are vegeterian and don’t eat eggs. Therefore, most of the indian breads are made without eggs.

What is the difference between Roti and Naan?

Both roti and naan are flat breads. The only difference is the use of yeast and yoghurt in naan, whereas roti is made with only flour and water.

Key steps of making naan:

  • Preparing the dough
  • Letting the dough rise
  • Dividing the dough
  • Adding the filling(optional)
  • Cooking the naan
  • Brushing with butter and/or garlic

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 125g cup plain yogurt
  • Extra flour for dusting
  • Butter or ghee for brushing (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro or chopped garlic for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water (around 110°F or 45°C) and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.
  3. Prepare the dough: Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the activated yeast mixture, plain yogurt, and vegetable oil or melted ghee. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for this step.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rest in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  6. Preheat the skillet: Preheat a large skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat while the dough is rising.

  7. Divide the dough: Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles, then divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball.

  8. Roll out the naan: On a floured surface, take one dough ball and roll it out into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick. Dust with additional flour if needed to prevent sticking.

  9. Cook the naan: Place the rolled-out naan on the preheated skillet and cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until bubbles form and the naan becomes golden brown and slightly charred.
  10. Optional garnish: If desired, brush the cooked naan with butter or ghee and sprinkle with fresh cilantro or chopped garlic for added flavor.
  11. Repeat the process: Roll out and cook the remaining naan dough balls in the same way.

  12. Serve warm: Serve the homemade naan bread warm with your favorite Indian curries, stews, or use it to make delicious wraps or sandwiches.
