What is Gulab Jamun?

Gulab jamun is a traditional indian dessert which is very popular all around south west asian countries. We also call it “Lal Mohan” in Nepal. This is such a delicious dessert that is used for almost all occasions.

Why Gulab Jamun?

Simply because it is delicious.

Key steps to making gulab jamun

  • Mixing the flour and the milk powder
  • Creating a dough
  • Frying the gulab jamun balls
  • Making the sugar syrup
  • Leaving the Gulab Jamun in the sugar syrup

To make gulab jamun, you will need:

For the gulab jamun balls :

– 100 grams milk powder
– 60 grams all-purpose flour
– 2 tablespoons of ghee or butter
– 1 teaspoon of baking powder
– 2-3 tablespoon of milk
– Oil for frying

For the syrup:

– 2 cups of sugar
– 2 cups of water
– 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder or 2 tablespoons of orange blossom essence
– Saffron strands(optional)

Instructions:

Step 1:

In a mixing bowl, add the milk powder, all-purpose flour, ghee/butter, and baking powder. Mix well.

Step 2:

Add the milk, little by little, and knead until you have a soft and smooth dough.

Step 3:

Let the dough rest for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 4:

In a pan, add the sugar and water for the syrup and bring to a boil.

Step 5:

Add the cardamom powder and saffron strands to the syrup and let it simmer on low heat. Sometimes I like to add orange blossom essence when making gulab jamuns, as it is not always easy to find saffron and cardamom. And when I do so, I add the essence only when the sugar syrup is ready.

Step 6:

Meanwhile, heat the oil in another pan for frying.

Step 7:

Divide the dough into small balls. I usually make 12 -14 balls out of this dough.

Fry the balls until they turn golden brown.

Step 9:

Remove from heat and dip in the syrup.
