My Favorite Apple Crumble Recipe – A Delicious Discovery in France

There’s something truly comforting about a warm apple crumble, especially when the aroma of baked apples and cinnamon fills the kitchen. I first discovered this delightful dessert in France while dining at a charming restaurant outdoors. One bite, and I was hooked! That experience led me on a journey to perfect my own version of this classic treat.

 

After trying numerous recipes over the years, I finally landed on what I now call my favorite apple crumble recipe. It’s the one my husband and I love the most, with the perfect balance of sweet, tart apples and a buttery, golden crumble topping. Simple to make yet absolutely delicious, this recipe has become a staple in our home. I can’t wait to share it with you—because I’m sure it will become your favorite too!

Ingredients

🍏 For the filling:

  • 6-8 apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 2 pears (optional, peeled or unpeeled, sliced)
  • 2-3 tbsp light brown granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Lemon juice from half a lemon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Grated ginger (optional)

🥧 For the crumble topping:

  • 150g flour
  • 100g ground almonds
  • ½ tsp baking powder (optional, but it helps the crumble brown beautifully)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 100g butter (cold, cubed)
  • 120g light brown granulated sugar (for that lovely texture!)

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish.

2️⃣ Cook the Apples: In a pan over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp butter. Add the apple slices, 2-3 tbsp sugar, lemon juice, ginger and cinnamon. I like to add grated ginger too on almost all my apple recipes. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften slightly and release their juices. Transfer the cooked apples to the baking dish. If using pears, mix them in raw—they don’t need to be pre-cooked!

3️⃣ Make the Crumble Topping: In a bowl, mix the flour, ground almonds, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Add the cold butter cubes and rub them into the dry ingredients with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

4️⃣ Assemble & Bake: Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and crisp.

5️⃣ Serve & Enjoy: Let it cool slightly before serving. This crumble is amazing on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or custard! Honestly, I love it even without any ice cream.
